Softball Drops Two Games to Occidental

RIVERSIDE - On February 9, 2025, the La Sierra University Golden Eagles softball team faced a tough opponent in Occidental College for a double header where they fell 3-12 and 2-6.

In game one, starting pitcher, Jennifer Govea, took the mound for the Golden Eagles where she earned two strikeouts.

Key hits were made by Mekaila Smith, Renee Sena, and Alexis Cook, contributing crucially to the Golden Eagles' efforts. Notably, Renee Sena hit a double, and Alexis Cook made a notable stolen base, further highlighting the Golden Eagles' offensive attempts.

Runs for the Golden Eagles were scored by Mia Franco, Jillian Hernandez, and Danielle Pfennig, with RBIs credited to Makeila Smith and Renee Sena. A strategic moment came when Jazlynn Hernandez and Danielle Pfennig teamed up for a double play, showcasing their defensive skills by catching a line drive and throwing out the base runner at first.

In game two, the Golden Eagles fought valiantly, managing to score two runs thanks to efforts from Alexis Cook and Ji. Hernandez. Despite impressive individual performances, with Pfennig and Smith contributing with crucial RBIs, the team ultimately could not secure a win.

Offensively, aside from the RBIs, standout moments included several key hits and strategic plays such as Smith's sacrifice fly in the 3rd inning, which allowed Cook to score.

In terms of pitching, the Golden Eagles cycled through a series of pitchers including Shelbie Debenedetti, Christina Pierce, Lidia Flores, Alexandra Aguilar, in hopes of stifling the Tigers' hitters.

The Golden Eagles prepare for their next game on February 13, 2025, against Park University Gilbert at the Arizona Athletic Grounds. They take the field for a double header at 10 am MST.
