Golden Eagles Split with Regals

RIVERSIDE - La Sierra University softball split the day against California Lutheran University in a 2-1 walk-off victory, and a 4-11 loss.

Game 1

La Sierra University rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh, capping a pitcher's duel with a walk-off victory. The Golden Eagles trailed from the second inning on before a bases-loaded walk to Ayiana Cardenas and a game-winning RBI single by Annica Carrion flipped the result in the final frame.

Down 1-0 entering their last at-bat, La Sierra finally broke through against the Regals. La Sierra loaded the bases in the seventh, and Cardenas drew a walk to force in the tying run. Moments later, Carrion delivered a single to left field, driving in the decisive run and sealing the 2-1 decision.

The late offense backed a complete-game effort from La Sierra starter Tori Morton, who held the Regals to one run on six hits over seven innings. Morton struck out five and did not commit an error behind her, as the Golden Eagles played clean defense. Morton needed 102 pitches to go the distance, stranding five runners and keeping La Sierra within a run until the offense came through in the seventh.

California Lutheran scored its only run in the top of the second putting the visitors ahead 1-0. Despite four doubles on the day and six total hits, California Lutheran could not add to the lead against Morton, who repeatedly worked out of trouble. The Golden Eagles finished with eight hits overall and left five runners on base.
Cardenas was a constant presence on the bases for La Sierra, reaching in all of her plate appearances. She recorded two hits, drove in a run, walked twice, and stole a base, posting a 1.000 on-base percentage in the win. Her seventh-inning walk ignited the deciding rally, and Carrion's RBI single completed it as the Golden Eagles overturned a one-run deficit in their final opportunity.

With the come-from-behind victory, La Sierra combined timely hitting, error-free defense, and a complete-game performance in the circle to secure the narrow win. The Golden Eagles used patience at the plate and steady pitching to outlast California Lutheran in a tight contest.

Game 2

The Golden Eagles struck first, manufacturing a run in the bottom of the first. Cardenas reached and came around to score when Hailey Marquez lifted a sacrifice fly, giving La Sierra a 1-0 advantage. The lead doubled in the second inning when Marytza Morales singled and later crossed the plate on a misplay that allowed Cardenas to reach on an error, putting La Sierra ahead 2-0 through two innings.

California Lutheran finally broke through in the fourth to cut the deficit in half. The Regals then took the lead for good later in the frame to complete a three-run inning and make it 3-2. Cal Lutheran continued to apply pressure with two more runs in the fifth.

La Sierra answered in the bottom of the fifth to stay within striking distance. Jazlynn Hernandez reached and later scored when Marquez reached on an error, trimming the margin to 5-3. The Golden Eagles continued to battle in the late innings, putting runners on and forcing deep counts, but could not produce the big inning needed to overtake Cal Lutheran's growing advantage.

Cal Lutheran added insurance in the sixth to push the lead to 7-3. The visitors then broke the game open in the seventh that extended the lead to 11-3.

La Sierra continued to compete to the final out. In the bottom of the seventh, Mia Franco reached and came home on a solid single to left by Victoria Esparza, accounting for the Golden Eagles' fourth run. Esparza finished with two hits and an RBI to lead the La Sierra offense, while Marquez drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring reach-on-error. The Golden Eagles collected eight hits on the afternoon and scored in four separate innings.

Despite the loss, La Sierra showed early-game execution at the plate and resilience throughout the contest. With the offense finding ways to produce runs in multiple innings, the Golden Eagles will look to build on those positives and tighten up defensively as they continue nonconference play in the coming weeks.

The Golden Eagles are next set to face Westcliff University for a double header at home with first pitch at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 13th.
