The La Sierra Golden Eagles men's golf delivered a record-breaking performance at the Coyote Classic, rewriting the program's history books at Oak Valley Golf Club. The Golden Eagles shattered their previous 54-hole team scoring record by an astonishing 60 strokes, showcasing a breakthrough moment for the rising program.
La Sierra set the tone early, posting what was then their best 18-hole score of the season with a 303 in Monday's opening round. Not content to stop there, the squad came back even stronger in Tuesday's finale, firing a 301 to establish a new single-round program record and cap off a historic showing.
Leading the charge was junior
Kyle Harford, whose steady play anchored the lineup. Harford finished at 8-over par, placing in the top half of the competitive 80-player field. His rounds of 75-74-75 were highlighted by six birdies and a spectacular eagle on the par-5 13th during the second round.
Fellow junior
Ky Stopp delivered one of the tournament's most impressive performances in the final round, carding a 2-under 70—just one stroke shy of the school record. Stopp's round featured exceptional ball striking and four birdies, including clutch conversions on both back-nine par 3s. His surge marked a remarkable 13-shot improvement from round two to round three.
Freshman
Tyler Cole showed resilience beyond his years, overcoming adversity to play a key role in the team's success. After reaching even par through 10 holes, Cole battled through two lost balls on holes 7 and 8 yet regrouped to finish just 6-over for the round. He recorded his best collegiate 54-hole total with scores of 76-81-78.
Senior
Ryker Lazo contributed with timely scoring, including a first-round 77 that matched his season best. Lazo caught fire midway through his opening round with three consecutive birdies on holes 11 through 13, and later closed his tournament in style with birdies on holes 15 and 16 to help seal the program's best 18-hole score to date.
Additional contributions came from junior
Jordan Lopez and freshman
Austin Covert. Lopez posted the best tournament performance of his collegiate career, shooting 92 in both rounds two and three, highlighted by birdies on the 12th hole in round two and a standout approach shot on the par-5 16th in round three. Covert showed determination as well, rebounding from a tough opening round to improve his score each day.
With momentum on their side, the Golden Eagles now turn their attention to their next competition at the Soka Invitational, set for March 29 at Costa Mesa Country Club, where they will look to build on this historic achievement.
