In an attempt to finish the regular season in strong fashion
and take momentum into the playoffs, the Golden Eagles women's volleyball team
played their first of three matches this weekend. La Sierra hosted Arizona Christian
University, at the Alumni Pavilion, in their first and only match between the
two teams this season. The inspired
group of Golden Eagles came out ready to play, soaring to a three-game win,
25-20, 25-12, 25-21.
La Sierra started the match be taking Game 1 followed by a
dominating Game 2. Arizona Christian was
not about to go quietly, as they jumped out to an early lead in Game 3. But with three straight matches for the
Golden Eagles this weekend, the last thing they needed was to have the match
extended. La Sierra chipped away at the
Firestorm lead, eventually closing things out for the victory.
The statistical leaders for La Sierra were Siao Malepeai who
led all players with 10 kills, including nine digs. Lina Semaia had nine kills and four digs,
while Lupe Garcia finished with eight kills and eight digs. Setter Colleen Stafford guided the offense
with 30 assists and also added seven digs.
The Firestorm struggled offensively with 25 total kills and
25 attack errors, good for a .000 hitting percentage. La Sierra finished with 35 kills with 14
attack errors, and a hitting percentage of .204. The Golden Eagles also controlled the net
with six block assists and three solo block, compared to only two block assists
and one solo block for Arizona Christian.
Both teams tallied 44 digs on the afternoon.
Pushing their record to 18-10, the Golden Eagles will host
Johnson and Wales University (CO) tomorrow night (Saturday) at 7:30pm. Tomorrow night's match will also serve as a
Breast Cancer Awareness Night. Please
make plans to attend to support the Golden Eagles women's volleyball team and
to support the cure for breast cancer.
Fan sare asked to show your support by wearing pink and bringing monetary
donations (cash or check) that will be donated toward the research to cure

La Sierra will close the weekend with a Sunday morning match
versus Embry-Riddle University, at 11:00am.
