Riverside, CA - After
a quick turnaround, the Golden Eagles women's volleyball team capped off a
weekend sweep, by defeating Embry-Riddle University in three straight
games. On Friday, the team defeated
Arizona Christian University in three straight games. Saturday night, La Sierra beat Johnson &
Wales University. And with an early
start of 11:00am, the Golden Eagles responded to complete the three-match
weekend sweep, 25-19, 25-14, 25-17.
La Sierra played the minimum number of games (nine) over the
weekend, seemingly building momentum with each match. The team used a balance of solid offense and
stingy defense to keep Embry-Riddle off balance and scrambling throughout the
match. The Golden Eagles tallied 45
kills on 101 attempts with 16 attack errors, good for a hitting percentage of
.287. Embry Riddle finished with 21
kills on 100 attempts and also had 16 attack errors, for a hitting percentage
of .050. La Sierra had 51 digs compared
to 34 digs for Embry Riddle.
Setter Colleen Stafford guided the Golden Eagles offense
with 39 assists on their 45 total kills.
Lina Semaia finished with a game-high 13 kills. Siao Malepeai and Lupe Garcia added 10 kills
each and Shelby Madigan was close behind, pitching in nine kills of her
own. Madigan and Garcia led the team
defensively with 16 and 13 digs respectively.
Ana Flores and Johanna Tope pitched in with six digs apiece.
For the second season in a row, the Golden Eagles have
reached the 20-win mark. With the win,
the team improves to 20-10 on the season.
They will closeout the regular season on Wednesday, October 21, at
7:30pm. La Sierra will play host to
CSU-San Marcos in the rubber match of a three-match season series between the
two teams.
Wednesday night's match will also be the final home match
for three seniors on the women's volleyball team. The women's volleyball team and the Golden
Eagles athletic department will honor Ashley Baumgaertel, Paula Hernandez, and
Shelby Madigan at Wednesday's match. On
a separate note, senior night will coincide with costume night. If you are planning to attend Wednesday's
match, please feel free to dress up in a costume and enjoy the fun.
