Riverside, Calif. - The men's basketball team opened their season with an 88-66 loss to Biola University tonight, at the Alumni Pavilion.
Biola took control of the game early and never looked back. After CJ Goldsmith knocked down his first 3-point shot of the game, Biola answered back with a 7-0 run, over the next three minutes, and never trail again.
With 9:15 remaining to play in the first half, Biola extended their lead to 23-10, before the Golden Eagles put an 8-0 run of their own together, cutting the lead 23-18.
But Biola quickly answered right back with a 14-2 run, over the next two and a half minutes, pushing the lead to 37-20, with just over four minutes to play in the half.
An Ian Mozelski 3-point shot, in the final minute of the half, cut the lead down to 11 points (40-29) in favor of Biola, but yet again they answered back with a 6-0 run capped off by Pierre Zook who connected from beyond the arc, pushing the lead back to 17 points at the halftime buzzer.
Despite the effort, the Golden Eagles were unable to cut into the lead in the second half, as Biola cruised to their second victory of the season.
La Sierra falls to 0-1 as they open the season.
The Golden Eagles had four player score in double figure, led by Andre Marquez who finished with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Isaiah Hawkins pitched in 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, while CJ Goldsmith and Ian Mozeleski each contributed 10 points.
Mike Kurtz and Pierre Zook led the way for Biola, scoring 25 points and 24 points respectively.
La Sierra will have thier first road test of the season, this Saturday night, when they visit The Master's College (Santa Clarita, Calif.). The Mustangs (0-1) defeated La Sierra in their only meeting last season. Saturday night's contest will be the first of two meetings between the two teams.
