Riverside, Calif. - The men's basketball team jumped into the win column with a 76-67 win over Menlo College on Friday afternoon. The Golden Eagles picked a good time to notch their first win of the season, as they played host to Menlo College in the Cal Pac Conference opener.
La Sierra controlled the game from the tip to the final buzzer, as they jumped out to an early 8-0 lead just minutes into the game. The Oaks settled in and answered with five quick points of their own, but the Golden Eagles never relinquished the lead on their way to victory.
The Golden Eagles steadily built their lead, taking a 39-21 lead into the locker room at the half. In the early minutes of the second half they would extend their lead to a comfortable 43-21 advantage.
But the Oaks weren't about to go away quietly. Trailing 60-41 with 7:02 to play, the Oaks put together a furious 19-6 run, cutting La Sierra's lead to just 66-60 with 1:23 to play.
The Golden Eagles made enough free-throws down the stretch to push their record to 1-13 (1-0 in Cal Pac play).
Senior guard Isaiah Hawkins led the team with 28 points, to go along with six rebounds, three steals and three assists. Hawkins connected on 5-of-6 shots from beyond the three-point line.
