Riverside, Calif. - The Golden Eagles softball team dropped both games of Sunday's doubleheader versus California State University-San Marcos. La Sierra fell 7-3 in Game 1, followed by a 9-0 decision in Game 2.
In Game 1, the Cougars jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, with three runs in the opening frame. They pushed the lead to 4-0, before the Golden Eagles scored in their half of the second inning. The Cougars added another run in the top of the sixth inning, pushing the lead to 5-1, but La Sierra answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the sixth inning, trimming the lead to 5-3.
San Marcos scored two more insurance runs in the final inning, on their way to victory. The Cougars scored seven runs, on eleven hits, taking advantage of five errors by the Golden Eagles defense.
Katie Wilkinson picked up the win for the Cougars, going seven complete innings, while giving up three runs, on eight hits, and collecting four strikeouts against no walks. Golden Eagles starting pitcher, Vanessa Froussine was charged with the loss.
Katie Witherby led the Golden Eagles offense with two RBI's, going 2-for-3 in the game. Outfielder Berlyn Benavides added an RBI of her own, finishing 2-for-4 in Game 1. La Sierra had six players who finished with at least one hit in the contest.
Game 2, saw the Cougars in control from the start. After taking an early 3-0 lead, with three runs in the second inning, the Cougars broke the game open with a 5-run sixth inning.
Ashley Dagenais held the Golden Eagles offense in check, giving up just two hits through six complete innings, picking up the win. Frousine pulled double-duty, giving up four earned runs through five innings. Only five of the Cougars nine runs were earned, as they again capitalized on three errors by the Golden Eagles.
Klarissa Garcia and Benavides picked up the lone hits for La Sierra, who is now 0-6 on the season.
The team will return to action this Friday when they travel to Biola University for an afternoon doubleheader, starting at 12pm.
