Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WBB Wins Cal Pac Opener Over PUC

The Golden Eagles (5-11, 1-0) women's basketball team defeated Pacific Union College in convincing fashion, 69-46, on Saturday night, in Angwin, Calif. It was the Cal Pac opener for both teams. The team was led in scoring by freshmen post player Alexis Davis who was the only Golden Eagle to score in double figures with 11 points.

After the Pioneers scored the first two points of the game, on two made free throws by Jade Mena, the Golden Eagles never trailed for the rest of the contest. The two teams played a tight first quarter, with La Sierra holding a 12-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. But by the halftime break, the Golden Eagles extended their lead to 32-21.

Halfway through the third quarter, the Golden Eagles extended their lead to 21 points (49-28) and never allowed their lead to fall lower than 15 points for the remainder of the game.

The Golden Eagles dominated play in the paint by outscoring the Pioneers 36-16 in the paint. They also enjoyed a 17-5 advantage on second chance points. La Sierra's defense held Pacific Union College to just 28-percent shooting from the field, including 5-for-22 (23%) in the first half of play. And the Golden Eagles bench finished with a 44-12 scoring advantage over the Pioneers.

While La Sierra held a comfortable lead for the majority of the game, they did struggle from the free throw line, as they connected on only eight of the 19 free throw attempts.

La Sierra used a balanced attack with four players tallying seven points (Kailee Maeda, Monique Rippingale, Chelseie Baham, and Afolake Akingba). Korie Siets added eight points in the winning effort and Kristen Brummett contributed 10 rebounds, six points, and three steals. Maeda and Baham distributed four assists each, while Rippingale added eight rebounds for the game.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Golden Eagles who will travel to Simpson University, on Sunday evening, for the second game of a back-to-back for La Sierra. The Red Hawks are currently 5-11 on the season and 1-1 in Cal Pac play.
