Riverside, Calif. - The men's basketball team snapped an eight game losing streak to jump back into the win column with an 86-67 win over Embry-Riddle University (AZ) on Thursday evening. Lance Jones led the way with 18 points, on 6-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-9 from the 3pt line.
After falling behind, 11-5, in the first five minutes of play, the Golden Eagles used a 7-1 run to tie the game at 12-12 with 12:50 to play in the first half. That would prove to be the last time the Golden Eagles would trail, as they finished the first half on a 24-10 run, to take a 36-22 lead into the locker room at the half.
At the start of the second half, each team exchanged their share of runs, with Embry-Riddle cutting the deficit to 10 points on two different occasions, only to see the Golden Eagles answer each run and push the lead back up to 19 points. La Sierra eventually pushed the advantage to as many as 24 points (79-55) in the final minute, before settling for the 86-67 victory.
The win improved their record to 2-10 on the season and 1-0 in Cal Pac play. Joining Jones in the scoring line was Gerald Williams who also shot 6-for-11 from the field to finish with 17 points, six assists, four rebounds, and two steals. Two other players tallied double-figures in scoring, as Andre Marquez contributed 14 points and Kevin Batiste added 10 points. Batiste also notched a game-high six rebounds on the night.
La Sierra shot 51-percent from the field, including 39-percent from beyond the arc (9-for-23). They also shot 81-percent (17-of-21) from the free throw line, where they have struggled of late.
The team will host Benedictine University on Saturday night in a non-conference match-up. The Redhawks are 7-13 on the season and will become full-fledged members of the Cal Pac starting in 2016-17. This is the first ever meeting between the two programs.
