Riverside, Calif. - The women's basketball team split their final two regular season games. The team defeated Pacific Union College, 67-44, and lost to Simpson University, 75-56. The victory over the Pioneers secured the #4 seed in next weekend's Cal Pac Conference Tournament.
On Thursday, the Golden Eagles sandwiched two even quarters with two quarters that ultimately made the difference in the game. La Sierra jumped out to an early 15-8 lead after the first quarter, they then closed the game out by outscoring the Pioneers 26-10 in the final quarter.
Four different players scored in double figures, led by Kristin Brummett who scored 18 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Chelsie Baham added 14 points and six rebounds, while Alexis Davis and Rachel Hahn pitched in with 12 points each. Davis also pulled down eight rebounds.
On Saturday night, the Golden Eagles were unable to recover from a slow start in the first quarter. After one quarter of play, the Golden Eagles trailed the Redhawks 25-6. Over the final three quarter, the two teams played even.
Once again, it was Brummett who led the team in scoring, with 17 points. Davis finished with a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Korie Siets pitched in with 11 points and six steals.
Prior to Saturday night's game, the team recognized their four seniors (Afolake Akingba, Kristen Brummett, Taylor Johnson, and Kailiee Maeda) for their contributions and commitment to the women's basketball program.
The team will now set their sights on the Cal Pac Championship Tournament. As the #4 seed they will face the University of California – Merced who finished the season as the #1 seed. The Bobcats defeated the Golden Eagles in both meetings this season. The two teams will meet up for a third time on Sunday afternoon, at 4pm, on the campus of CSU Maritime, the host of the Cal Pac Championship Tournament.
