Riverside, Calif. - The men's soccer team defeated Embry-Riddle University by a final of 3-0 in today's Cal Pac match-up. With the win, the Golden Eagles improved to 6-1 in Cal Pac play (8-5 overall) and keep pace with undefeated Marymount University. It is the second time this season, La Sierra has knocked off a team that was receiving votes for the Top 25 national ranking. The first team La Sierra defeated, that was receiving votes, was the University of Antelope Valley.
La Sierra jumped on the scoreboard with the benefit of an own goal, off of a Golden Eagles corner kick. La Sierra took the 1-0 lead into the half and pushed the lead to 2-0, when Abel Cornejo was taken down inside the penalty box, and Israel Vasquez was tabbed to take and eventually convert the penalty kick. The Golden Eagles added another insurance goal, for good measure, when Isaac Ruiz found the back of the net, off of an assist by Wuilberto Ortiz.
Outside of the Golden Eagles offense, La Sierra was able to turn back the Embry-Riddle attack with some solid defense. While Embry-Riddle was able to outshoot the Golden Eagles, 18-15, only one of those 18 shots resulted in a shot-on-goal. The Eagles had a handful of point blank opportunities but were unable to find the net.
The men's soccer team will have limited time to enjoy this victory as they will quickly turn their focus to Benedictine University. The Redhawks will visit La Sierra, on Sunday morning, at 11am. Benedictine is currently 5-3 in the Cal Pac (7-6 overall), in fifth place, battling to climb into the fourth and final playoff position as the conference season winds down.
