Women's Basketball Fall to HIU After Slow Start

Fullerton, Calif. - The women's basketball team opened their season with an 85-67 loss, on the road, at Hope International University. Double-doubles by Alexis Davis and Mikayla Stitt were not enough, as the Royals finished with six players scoring in double figures. The Golden Eagles play their first seven contests of the season on the road.

La Sierra struggled to gain their footing from the tip, as they found themselves in an early hole, 20-9, after the first quarter of play. The Golden Eagles rebounded to win the second quarter (22-21) but went into the halftime break trailing by a score of 41-31. The deficit proved to be too much for La Sierra who trailed by as many as 24 points in the second half.

The Golden Eagles were unable to find their rhythm from the perimeter, only connecting on 2-of-18 from beyond the arc and converted on 11-of-20 free throw attempts.

Davis led the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Stitt notched 13 points and 10 rebounds on the night. Elsie Mejia contributed with nine points, four steals, four rebounds, and three assists.

The team will look to turn the page as they jump back into action on Saturday night. The Golden Eagles will travel to San Diego Christian College for a non-conference game, starting at 6:30pm. The game will be played on the campus of Grossmont College.
