Peterson Notches Win Over Pioneers For DH Split

Riverside, Calif. - The baseball team split the first two games of this weekend's 3-game series with the University of Antelope Valley. The Golden Eagles won 6-2 in the opener before losing 18-4 in the second game of the day. The baseball team now sits at 5-11 in Cal Pac play (13-19 overall).

The story of the first game was a stellar pitching performance from starter Thomas Peterson and Chris Johnson. Peterson surrendered no runs while giving up just two hits through five innings. Johnson came in in relief, giving up one unearned run on four total hits through three innings. Michael Hoyes pitched the final inning and secured the victory for La Sierra.

The Golden Eagles were able to overcome a tough defensive game, with the Pioneers unable to capitalize on four La Sierra errors.

Matt Mahjer led the way offensively with two runs batted including a homerun that sailed over the left field fence. David Roman also collected two runs batted in with t 2-run single.

In the second game of the day it was all Pioneers who scored 18 runs on 17 total hits. Both teams struggled defensively as they combined for a total of seven errors (La Sierra – 5, UAV – 2).

Justin Jordan was the only Golden Eagles player with a multi-hit game as he went 3-for-3 in the game.

Of the Pioneers 17 hits, three were homeruns. William Garcia led the way for Antelope Valley with five hits in six at-bats, resulting in five runs batted in. He was one of six players who tallied at least two hits in the game and one of four players who collected at least two RBI's.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday morning, starting at 11am, for the finale of the 3-game series. After Sunday's game is over, the two teams will complete a game that was suspended, on March 5 at the University of Antelope Valley, due to weather. The game will resume where it left off, in the 5th inning, and the Pioneers leading 10-6.
