Costa Mesa, Calif. - The men's soccer season got underway with a road match at Vanguard University, in what has become somewhat of an early season tradition between the two programs. The Lions defeated the Golden Eagles by a final of 2-0 in the season opener. It was the start for a program that looks to integrate many new faces over the coming weeks, leading up to their conference opener on September 21, versus Sierra Nevada College.
Vanguard controlled play for the majority of the match by out-shooting the Golden Eagles 29-4, including 12-1 in shots on goal.
The Lions struck for their first goal, by Jared Gould (assisted by Carlos Yepez and Nahum Paz), in the 38th minute. They took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break, before adding their second goal in the 83rd minute, for the 2-0 victory.
The Golden Eagles (0-1) will turn the page and prepare for their next contest, this coming Thursday, August 24, at 11am. The team will travel to Encinitas, Calif., to face St. Katherine College in a non-conference match.
