Sida's Late Penalty Kick Secures Victory in Conference Opener

Riverside, Calif. – Andrea Sida converted a late penalty kick (86th minute) to give La Sierra (6-0, 1-0) their sixth win of the season, and first Cal Pac win of the season. The conference win matches the total number of conference win the team had last season and continues to raise the bar, in what is already a record-setting season for the women's soccer program, as a member of the NAIA and the California Pacific Conference. But the young squad is just getting started and looking to continue to build on that success.

In what was a tightly contested match and on the verge of heading into extra time, the Golden Eagles were awarded with the penalty kick when the Sierra Nevada defender committed the foul to avoid what would have been a breakaway opportunity for La Sierra.

Both teams had a handful of scoring opportunities, with the Golden Eagles unable to cash in on a few point blank chances in the second half. Nevertheless, La Sierra got what they wanted in the end.

Sierra Nevada made the most of their opportunities with all five shots coming in on goal, but they were unable to get one past Lauren Holly who finished with the five saves. Holly, and the Golden Eagles defense have yet to allow a goal this season.

The team will once again host Ottawa University (AZ) in a rematch of their September 2 meeting, when the Golden Eagles handed the Spirit their first loss of the season. Ottawa is currently 5-2 on the season and most recently dropped a 1-0 decision to Benedictine University – Mesa. The two teams will meet again, in a non-conference match, on Sunday evening, at 6pm.
