Riverside, Calif. - One streak ended while another streak was extended in the women's soccer victory over Providence Christian, 5-1. The streak that came to an end was the scoreless streak the Golden Eagles defense has tallied, having not allowed a goal through their first seven matches. Most importantly, the team pushed their winning streak to eight matches (8-0) and are now 2-0 in Cal Pac play.
Mariah Anaya wasted no time putting the Golden Eagles on the board, with an unassisted goal in the 6th minute. Marissa Gonzalez pushed the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 12th minute, also unassisted.
But the Golden Eagles surrendered their first goal of the season after the Seabeggars were awarded a penalty kick after La Sierra was whistled for a foul inside the box. The women's soccer team did not allow a ball into the back of their net for the first 630:58 this season.
The goal temporarily cut the Golden Eagles lead in half, but Monica Santana's unassisted goal, in the 34th minute, pushed the lead back to two goals, at 3-1. La Sierra looked content to head into the halftime break with a two goal lead, but Hanna Kanagawa had other plans as she scored the first of two goals on the night with just six seconds remaining in the half.
Kanagawa scored the only goal of the second half, off an assist by Andrea Sida, in the 66th minute.
La Sierra dominated play for the majority of the match. They outshot the Seabeggars 17-6 in total shots and 12-4 in shots on goal. The Golden Eagles had at least three shots that glanced off of either the crossbar or post, Providence's Courtney Osburn collecting seven saves in the loss. La Sierra's Lauren Holly finished with three saves in her seventh win in goal this season.
Next up for the women's soccer team will be a match-up against the University of Antelope Valley, on Sunday evening, at 5pm. The Pioneers are 1-0 in Cal Pac play (6-3 overall), having defeated UC Merced in their only conference match.
