Riverside, Calif. - The Golden Eagles cruised to a dominating 16-0 win over Shepherd University that is a relatively new program that plays in the National Christian College Athletic Association. Mariah Anaya scored four of the team's 16 goals and notched an assist in the victory. Four other players scored two goals each, for the Golden Eagles. The women's soccer team stays unbeaten on the season with a record of 4-0 and still has yet to surrender a goal this season. The team has one more non-conference match, next week, before opening Cal Pac conference play, at home, against Sierra Nevada College on September 21.
Goalkeeper and team captain Lauren Holly, who was named the Cal Pac Defensive Player of the Week credits her fellow defenders with that honor. "It's obviously an honor to be receiving that [recognition]. Obviously those were some pretty good teams we were up against," said Holly. "I mean obviously they see shutouts so they look to the goalkeeper, but [my defenders] have so much more to do with it."
But aside from the defensive highlights, the story of tonight's match was the offensive that set another record with 16 goals in a match. The scoring was often and started early. Marissa Gonzalez scored the first goal of the night, on an assist from Mariah Anaya, in the 2nd minute of play. Monica Santana scored the final goal in the 71st minute, unassisted.
