Angwin, Calif. - The women's basketball team improved to 2-1 in Cal Pac play with Saturday night's 82-74 win over Pacific Union College. The Golden Eagles jumped out of the gates early and survived a Pioneers run to push their overall record to 7-10 on the season. Conference play continues this weekend, with La Sierra's first two Cal Pac home games.
La Sierra took an early double-digit lead by winning the first quarter 23-13. The Pioneers fought back to cut the lead to 41-38 by the halftime break. But the Golden Eagles pushed the lead to 65-50 by the end of the third quarter, by virtue of a 24-12 advantage in the third quarter of play. That proved to be enough to survive a fourth quarter run by Pacific Union.
The Golden Eagles led by as many as 16 points in the game, as they were paced by a game-high 21 points from Elsie Mejia. Wanna Wong added 12 points to the tally and Alexis Davis pitched in with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Mikayla Stitt led the team with nine rebounds to go along with seven points, while DeShield Fajardo paced the team with six assists which was one more than Mejia's five assists.
As a team, the Golden Eagles shot only 37 percent from the field, but were able to take advantage of 36 Pioneers turnovers, resulting in 22 steals for the Golden Eagles.
La Sierra will now return to their home court for their Cal Pac home opener versus California State University – Maritime Academy, on Thursday evening, at 5:30pm. The Keelhaulers are currently 0-3 in Cal Pac play (5-12 overall). La Sierra won both meetings between the two teams last season.
