MBB Comeback Falls Short in Loss to Pioneers

Angwin, Calif - La Sierra's comeback bid falls short in a 93-91 loss, at Pacific Union College, in Saturday night's Cal Pac match-up. The Golden Eagles dug themselves a hole they were unable to get out of, despite having a chance to tie or win the game at the final buzzer. Conference play continues, with the Golden Eagles hosting two games, in their Cal Pac home openers.

It was a tale of two halves for the Golden Eagles who surrendered 59 first half points, compared to only 34 in the second half. But regardless of the number, it proved too high of a hill to climb as La Sierra fell to 1-2 in Cal Pac play (4-12 overall). The Pioneers were also able to capitalize on 21 turnovers, committed by the Golden Eagles, resulting in 20 points for Pacific Union.

The Golden Eagles struggled to keep pace on both ends of the floor, shooting just 30 percent from the floor in the first half, to find themselves trailing 59-40 at the halftime break. In the second half, the Golden Eagles shot 47 percent from the field, including 46 percent from the three-point line, outscoring the Pioneers 51-34.

La Sierra chipped away at the Pioneers lead to have a chance of tying or winning the game with a final shot with just over four seconds to play. But Kenny Lewis' three-point shot at the buzzer was on target but sailed just long and glanced off of the back rim.

Senior Rey Solorzano picked up another double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Isaac Deese led the team in scoring with 25 points, to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. Lewis added 14 points, on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc.

The men's basketball team will now turn the page and prepare for their conference home opener, against California State University – Maritime Academy. The Keelhaulers picked up their first conference win of the season, on Saturday night, by defeating Embry-Riddle University. Thursday's contest is scheduled for a 7:30 tip, following the conclusion of the women's game.
