Riverside, Calif. - The men's basketball team jumped back in the win column with Wednesday's 90-74 win over Westcliff University. The win pushed the team's record to 2-7 on the season, as they prepare for their conference opener this coming weekend. It was the second meeting, all-time, between the two programs, with the Golden Eagles pushing that record to 2-0.
The Golden Eagles exploded for 52 points, while shooting 58% from the field, to put the game out of reach and pick up their second win of the season. La Sierra held a 38-30 lead at the halftime break, and quickly doubled the lead in the opening minutes of the second half. They led by as many as 25 points, with nine minutes remaining to play, and were able to survive a late push by the Warriors.
Five different Golden Eagles players scored in double-figures and two players finished with a double-double. Duane Darrett Jr. connected on 7-of-9 three-point shots to lead the team with 21 points. DJ Everage scored 20 points, shooting 7-for-10 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line, and had a team-high five assists. Kenny Lewis added 17 points to go along with three assists. The two double-doubles came from Kyle Hamilton who scored 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Jacob Angel had an equal amount of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The men's basketball team will open Cal Pac play on Saturday night, versus the University Antelope – Valley. The Pioneers are the defending Cal Pac champions and defeated the Golden Eagles in both meetings last season.
