Whittier, Calif. - The Golden Eagles softball team visited Whittier College this past Friday in a non-conference doubleheader. The team lost the opener by a final of 10-5, then followed that up with a 6-6 tie in Game 2. The second game of the doubleheader was suspended due to darkness.
After taking a 3-0, by scoring one run in the first inning and two runs in the third inning, the Golden Eagles surrendered five runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to trail 5-3. It would prove to be a lead the Poets would hang onto.
The Poets had another 5-run inning in the fifth, before the Golden Eagles got two runs back in the top of the sixth inning. Both teams finished with 10 hits each.
Centerfielder Berlyn Benavides led the team going 3-for-4 in Game 1. Aimee Rodriquez also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-2. Kaylee Quezada and Jamie Roe each had one hit and one RBI in the game, accounting for the two earned runs the Golden Eagles pushed across the plate.
Game 2 started off in promising fashion as La Sierra jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Poets answered right back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the innings. The score remained tied until the fifth inning when the Golden Eagles struck for four runs, only to be answered again when the Poets scored four runs to tie the game at 6-6. After the two teams played a scoreless sixth inning, the game was suspended due to darkness and ended in a tie.
Four different players had a multi-hit game in Game 2. Benavides, Quezada, Rodriguez, and Brittney Meyers each finished with two hits in the game. Rodriguez had a team-high two RBI's, while Sierra Singer finished with an RBI of her own.
The softball team will play three games, next Friday, at the Triple Crown Tournament, followed by a single game on Saturday night. During the weekend tournament, they will go up against William Jessup University, Ottawa University – Arizona, Menlo College, and #3 Southern Oregon University.
