Women's Soccer: Two Second Half Goals Enough for Win Over ACU

Riverside, Calif. - Two second half goals propelled the women's soccer team to victory in their season opener, over Arizona Christian University. Marissa Gonzalez and Adrienna Moreno each scored goals to help the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 start. La Sierra is back in action, for another home match, on Sunday evening.

After the two teams entered the halftime break knotted in a scoreless tie, Gonzalez found the back of the net, in the 47thminute, on a free-kick opportunity just outside of the penalty box. The score remained 1-0 until Moreno added an insurance goal in the 78thminute, off of an assist by Andrea Sida. Goalkeeper Melanie Ramirez, with the help of her defense, had a solid match, finishing with a total of 12 saves in the shutout victory.

Aside from the score, the two teams played a relatively even match with the Firestorm outshooting the Golden Eagles 21-17 in total shots and 12-9 in shots on goal.

This was the first ever meeting between the two programs, who were scheduled to meet up a couple years ago but the match was ultimately cancelled.

The Golden Eagles will play host the University of St. Katherine, in a non-conference match, on Sunday evening, at 6pm.
