Riverside, Calif. - The men's soccer team dropped their season opener, with a final of 4-1, versus Arizona Christian University, on Monday night. La Sierra avoided the shutout with a late goal in the match but were unable to creep any closer against a solid showing by the Firestorm. The Golden Eagles will look to pick up their first win of the season in another non-conference home match this coming Sunday evening.
The Firestorm scored their first of four goals, in the 31stminute, when Carlos Morales scored with an assist from Lukas Macho. That proved to be the only goal for either team in the first 45 minutes of play, but the Firestorm broke the match open in the second half. Arizona Christian scored three unanswered goals in a span of 16 minutes and cruised to victory despite a late goal by the Golden Eagles.
Rodrigo De La O Peres scored the lone goal for La Sierra on an assist by Jessie Aramburo.
Arizona Christian controlled play for the majority of the match with a 22-9 advantage in total shots, including a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Luke Holt picked up the win between the pipes for the Firestorm, while Javier Lopez and Troy Dekker split the goalkeeper responsibilities for the Golden Eagles.
The men's soccer team will play another non-conference match on Sunday evening, at 8pm. They will once again play the second game of a doubleheader, when the Golden Eagles welcome the University of St. Katherine to La Sierra Field.
