Vallejo, Calif. - Manny Zendejas scored two goals and Israel Vasquez added three assists, to lead La Sierra to a 5-1 win over the Keelhaulers of the California State University – Maritime, in Vallejo, California. The team has now won three straight matches and pushed their record to 5-4 overall (2-0 in Cal Pac play). The men's soccer team opened conference play with a 2-0 win over Sierra Nevada College, on Thursday afternoon.
Zendejas started the scoring with a goal in the 26thminute, which proved to be the only goal scored in the first half of play. The Golden Eagles opened the second half with an early goal, by Jessie Aramburo, In the 47thminute. Just six minutes later, Felipe Mendizabal, off of a feed from Vasquez, pushed the lead to 3-0, in favor of the Golden Eagles. La Sierra quickly pushed the lead to 4-0, with a goal in the 57thminute, by Abel Cornejo, on another assist by Vasquez. Vasquez also assisted on the fifth goal of the game, this time finding Zendejas, in the 77thminute.
Javier Lopez finished with seven saves, allowing one goal, in the win. The Keelhaulers David Henderson allowed five goals, facing 32 total shots and 17 shots on goal, for a total of 15 saves.
The men's soccer team will now turn their attention to the University of Antelope Valley. The team will travel to Lancaster, California, on Sunday afternoon, for their next conference match-up with the Pioneers. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 3pm, following the conclusion of the women's match.
