Costa Mesa, Calif. – The baseball team, who were rained out on Friday afternoon, found Sunny skies on their visit to Vanguard University on Monday afternoon. The Golden Eagles were in town for a single game, in which the Lions prevailed by a final of 5-1. The loss dropped the team's record to 4-5 on the season.
Vanguard took the early lead with a run in the bottom half of the 1stinning. But the Golden Eagles tied the score at 1-1, when Andrew Lundstrom walked to reach base, then stole second, and subsequently scored on an RBI single by Josh Jubile. That proved to be the only run scored by La Sierra. The Lions added two runs in the 5thand two more runs in the 7thfor the comfortable 5-1 lead.
Jubile led the team offensively with two of the team's four hits. Justin Wear and Justin Shields accounted for the two other hits for La Sierra.
Justin Wren was charged with the loss after pitching the first 4 2/3 innings giving up three runs on four hits. Mark Bontempo pitched 2 1/3 innings, surrendering two runs on one hit, while Johnny Carlberg came in to pitch the final inning of play, giving up just one walk in his inning of work.
The Golden Eagles baseball team will open Cal Pac Conference play this coming weekend, versus with a single game on Friday, at 10am, and a doubleheader on Sunday, set for an 11am start.
