Riverside, Calif. – It was a windy, yet sunny day for the Golden Eagles home opener against Vanguard University (Costa Mesa, Calif.), after 16 months away from the pitch, due to COVID-19 constraints. Unfortunately, the Lions (2-0) came out on top, securing a 3-0 victory.
Just under two minutes into the match, the Lions struck first and didn't give the Golden Eagles much time to regroup, when they struck again, just over two minutes later, bringing the score to 2-0. Although down within the first five minutes of the match, the Golden Eagles hustled, trying to get out of the defensive third, but the Lions momentum continued as they scored just after the 10-minute mark, taking a 3-0 lead. The Golden Eagles would finally get some room to push the ball forward, getting two shots off prior to the horn signaling the end of the first half.
The Golden Eagles found more of an attacking rhythm in the second half, taking six shots, but not being able to find the back of the net. Ashley Villagrana would not allow the Lions to score again, as she had seven saves (10 overall), keeping the score at 3-0 as the clock expired.
Coach David Trevino said, "It's good to be playing again. Tough start. Lots of rust [and] nerves with so much downtime, but it was good to see us grow into the game."
Next up, the Golden Eagles travel to San Marcos for a match up with the University of Saint Katherine, Feb. 21st.
