Golden Eagles Take Down Hope, 5-3

RIVERSIDE - La Sierra men's soccer earned a 5-3 win in an intense match against Hope International University on Thursday Night. Vinicius Goncalves went for the hat trick, and Carlos Leon and Alex Munoz also scored.

The Royals struck first scoring just two minutes into the game. Neither side could get a goal in the next 37 minutes, despite La Sierra having multiple good looks on goal. Carlos Leon put the Golden Eagles on the board to even the playing field going into the second half.

Goncalves scored her first goal of the game in the 53rd minute of play with a banger into the top right pocket from Sean Palena to put La Sierra up 2-1 in the game. Hope answered back seconds later to even the score. Goncalves' second goal put the Golden Eagles back in the lead. Jonathan Arriaga sent the ball across the field to a charging Goncalves who headed the ball past the goalkeeper. His third and final goal earned him the hat trick and the game-winner. Palena drew a foul and Hope was awarded a yellow card. This set up Jose Alcala for the free kick. A long ball from Alcala met the head of Goncalves at the 17 who then tipped it past a charging goalie.

Alex Munoz finalized La Sierra's goals with a penalty kick in the 81st minute. Abraham Perez totaled four saves in goal, including a huge save off a penalty kick from Hope.

Hope scored a late goal in the second half to add to the high intensity game. La Sierra was able to hold them off for the remaining few minutes of play to secure the win.

Leon adds to his season total of 6 goals and Goncalves now sits at 5 goals.

The Golden Eagles improve to a conference record of 6-3 with a three game win streak.

The Golden Eagles are next set to face The Master's University at Reese Field on Tuesday, October 21 at 4:00 p.m.
