MESA, Ariz. — The La Sierra University Golden Eagles women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 2–1 victory over the Park-Gilbert Buccaneers on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at the AZ Athletic Grounds in Mesa.
Park-Gilbert opened the match with high pressure in the first seven minutes, but the Golden Eagles quickly settled in and took control. La Sierra broke through in the first half when
Tamara Gastelum buried a well-placed shot off an assist from
Priscila Alzaga, giving the Golden Eagles a 1–0 advantage heading into halftime.
The Buccaneers found the equalizer early in the second half, scoring in the
52nd minute to level the match at 1–1. But La Sierra responded with composure and determination.
Averi Costa netted the
game-winning goal in the 76th minute — her
first collegiate score — with
Alzaga once again providing the assist. "
The best part of scoring my first goal was being able to celebrate with everyone," Costa shared following the match.
Despite Park-Gilbert's late push, the Golden Eagles held firm.
Goalkeeper Ali Razon was a standout in net, recording
eight saves and coming up clutch down the stretch to preserve the victory.
With the result, La Sierra improves to
5-3-2 overall and
2-2-2 in conference play. The Golden Eagles will stay in Mesa for their next matchup, taking on
Benedictine Mesa on Tuesday, October 7.
