Golden Eagles Soar Past Red Hawks in 6-1 Win

MESA, Ariz. - La Sierra women's soccer faced Benedictine University Mesa at their home field where they came out victorious in a 6-1 match.

La Sierra was looking to continue their success on the road as they entered into their final game of the road trip. Immediately applying the pressure offensively, the Golden Eagles set the tone for the game.

Senior Leslie Lopez had an incredible run on the match. Offering 9 shots, she put up one goal and two assists for La Sierra.

The Golden Eagles were up 2-0 at the half with their first goal coming in the 26th minute after a cross from Lopez put the ball at Averi Costa's feet. Costa beat the defender and tipped the ball into the goal putting La Sierra on the board. The Golden Eagles second goal, and ultimately the game-winner, came in the 41st minute after Isabella Iniguez was fouled in the box. Iniguez stepped up to take the penalty kick and converted for the win.

La Sierra continued the scoring fest well into the second half of play. A foul from Benedictine in the 48th minute sets up Emily Baro at the half. She sent the ball to the head of Elaina Gonzalez knocking it back to the feet of Samantha Torres to push it past a charging goalie. Eleven minutes later, Gonzalez had a goal of her own from Gia Aldama. Aldama got herself out of a 5 on 1 jam to get the ball to Gonzalez who sent it into the goal past a diving Red Hawk goalie.

Intensity from Benedictine amplified with a Red Hawk drawing a red card to keep them shorthanded for the remaining 32 minutes of game play. The Red Hawks were able to put one on the board in the second half, but were unable to breakaway at the Golden Eagles growing score.

La Sierra finished the game with two more goals. Iniguez drew another foul about 30 yards from goal. Lopez took the kick and sent a banger into the left pocket. Freshman Giselle Silva earned her first goal of her career off a pass from Lopez.

Lopez, Torres, and Gonzalez all earned their team-leading fourth goals of the season.

La Sierra's defense shut down Benedictine, allowing nine shots and only five shots on goal. GSAC Defender of the Week, Ali Razon, added four more saves to her stat line.

La Sierra women's soccer return home on Tuesday, October 14 against SOKA University for a 5:00 p.m. match.
