Golden Eagles Fall to ACU in Conference Opener

RIVERSIDE - Women's volleyball competed in their first conference game of the 2025 season against Arizona Christian University. The Golden Eagles hosted the Firestorm for a Friday afternoon match.

Set scores were 11-25, 25-17, 19-25, 17-25.

Lanah Bergen led the Golden Eagles with 10 kills on the match. Ariana Pedroza and Abigail Hines added 9 and 8 respectively. Sakura Pangelinan recorded 7 kills.

The Golden Eagles totaled 10 service aces with four coming from Sarah Patin and four from Lindsay Delgadillo. Ava Himstreet led the team with 20 digs and 27 receptions. Delgadillo also added 24 assists.

La Sierra started off conference play strong with a first point win from a kill from Abigail Hines. ACU quickly countered La Sierra's attacks with several blocks to take the lead. After some back and forth, ACU was the first team to reach double digits, with a score of 10-5.

Ava Himstreet made a miraculous dive to give La Sierra confidence with Lanah Bergen following it up with a powerful kill. La Sierra competed against the Firestorm, but ACU took control of the first set.

ACU continued their strong blocking defense into the second set to take the lead. Bergen answered back with a hard kill to ignite the Golden Eagle drive. Early on in set two, there were five score ties with four lead changes. After an attack error from the Firestorm and a kill from Sakura Pangelinan to put the Golden Eagles up 8-7, the lead remained in La Sierra's favor. 

Herlinda Casanova kept up the momentum with an amazing dive across the court. Patin went on a service run to give La Sierra a strong lead of 13-7. With three service aces, Patin forced a timeout. After the timeout, Patin recorded an additional service ace.

Sweetheart Salaveo made it through Arizona Christian's wall, but ACU brought it back, turning the score to 16-13. Delgadillo completed two service aces of her own, dominating the ACU defense. With a score of 21-16, Pedroza recorded an impressive kill. La Sierra recorded three points in a row and then Pangelinan finished out the set with a kill.

ACU began the third set with a kill, but La Sierra answered back. ACU went on a scoring streak, but Hines slowed their confidence by slamming down a kill. The Firestorm controlled most of the third set creating a 12 point differential. La Sierra was not backing down from the fight with Kaylee Torres and Himstreet putting up serves in the Golden Eagles favor. With a set point in effect, La Sierra went on a four point run to apply pressure on ACU. Firestorm took the third.

In the final set, La Sierra started off strong taking the first point. With both teams determined to win, ACU reclaimed the lead and held it to the end.

The match saw competitive rallies in each set with hard kills and impressive blocks.

The Golden Eagles are next set to face Benedictine University Mesa Wednesday, September 10 at 5:00 PM in Mesa, Ariz.
