Golden Eagles Drop Four-Set Match to Benedictine

Mesa, Ariz. - La Sierra women's volleyball faced Benedictine University Mesa for game one of their Arizona series.

Set scores were 15-25, 22-25, 34-32, 16-25.

With the start of set one underway, the Red Hawks got out to an early two point lead, but La Sierra was quick to tie it up with two points of their own. Abigail Hines picked up the first kill for the Golden Eagles hoping to ignite a spark in the offense.

The Golden Eagles struggled to get things on their serve by committing three service errors in their first 10 points. However, La Sierra capitalized on Benedictine's faults at the service line with the Red Hawks committing 19 service errors on the game.

Despite trailing in the set, the Golden Eagles found their footing in defensive plays from Ava Himstreet and kills from Julissa Rodriguez and Hines.

Looking to come back aggressive in set two, women's volleyball took an early lead. The Red Hawks were quick to add their own points in the set and push past La Sierra. Hines continued her hot streak adding some kills for the Golden Eagles.

Hailey Frary and Lanah Bergen block assists closed the gap briefly. The Golden Eagles only trailed at most a few points behind the Red Hawks throughout the set, inching their way to take the lead.

Sarah Patin showed off her defensive skills diving to save an attack from an aggressive Benedictine offense. The Red Hawks edged ahead with some timely kills and a service ace that just made it over the net. 

Kaylee Torres went on a service run with two kills from Rodriguez to force the Red Hawks into a timeout. The set continued with intensity from both sides with La Sierra putting pressure and forcing the Red Hawks to commit errors. A hard kill from Hines kept La Sierra in the game, but set two sided with Benedictine.

Down 0-2 in the match, La Sierra looked to continue the rhythm they found in set two. La Sierra earned the first point in set three. Kills from Rodriguez, Pedroza, and Hines put the Golden Eagles up 3-0. Benedictine quickly tied the score back up and took the lead.

A kill from Hines put them back even. Similar to the previous sets, the Red Hawks kept a few point lead throughout the match with La Sierra just behind.

La Sierra capitalized off a service error from the Red Hawks and added a kill from Bergen and service ace from Herlinda Casanova to even the score. La Sierra regained the lead with a kill from Frary. The match started to heat up with both teams battling back and forth. Frary again puts one down on the Red Hawk side to put the Golden Eagles up.

La Sierra forced a timeout after going on a four point scoring run, taking a three point lead. With Benedictine within one, La Sierra called a timeout. More back and forth went between the two teams to put the set at 24-24. La Sierra pushed ahead off an attack error. Benedictine regained the lead, but La Sierra kept their drive alive, battling back three times to finally take control of the set, 29-28. The Golden Eagles took set three off of two kills from Bergen to end the set, 34-32.

Benedictine took an early lead in set four with a five point differential. La Sierra went on a seven point scoring run to take the lead from the Red Hawks. The Golden Eagles fought hard in the fourth set, but the Red Hawks pulled out the win.

Notable performances came from Rodriguez, Hines, and Bergen who lead the team in kills. Lindsay Delgadillo had 24 assists on the game and Himstreet added 30 digs. Frary had two blocks and Delgadillo, Bergen and Rodriguez all added one block each.

The Golden Eagles next face Park University Gilbert Thursday, September 11 at 6:00 p.m. at Arizona Athletic Grounds.
