Each year, presenting what have been characterized as "the equivalent of the Oscars" within Adventism, the Weniger Society celebrates the denominational and societal contributions of selected Adventists. The awards are named in honor of Charles E. Weniger, Dean of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary from 1948–58.
"A student from each Adventist university in North America will also be honored with a Weniger Fellows Student Scholarship Award, which includes a $1,500 scholarship. This year's La Sierra University Weniger Scholar is Luiza Triches Rodrigues.
Luiza is a former student athlete at La Sierra University, playing 5 seasons for the Golden Eagles Women's Basketball team. She is finishing up her graduate program in Counseling. Luiza was asked to stay on the Women's Basketball coaching staff as a Graduate Assistant for the 2025-26 season.
This year's awards will be presented at the Society's 51st annual awards event, scheduled for Sabbath, February 14, at 4:30 pm at the Loma Linda University Church.
