Golden Eagles Sweep Nelson in Two Standout Pitching Performances

RIVERSIDE - La Sierra University softball swept Nelson University-Arizona in two standout pitching performances. The Golden Eagles took game one after a three-run surge across the second and third innings and a complete game effort in the circle from Tori Morton to carry La Sierra to a 3-2 victory. Game two included a timely extra-base hit and a steady complete-game effort from Hanna Dobbs in the circle to earn La Sierra a 5-3 victory.

Game 1

Morton went the distance for the Golden Eagles, scattering six hits over seven innings while allowing two runs, only one of them earned. The right-hander struck out seven and walked just one on 108 pitches, repeatedly working out of trouble to preserve the one-run lead built by the offense in the middle frames.

Nelson struck first in the top of the first inning, and La Sierra answered in the bottom of the second, when pinch-runner Lola Tanner came in on an RBI groundout by Marytza Morales to even the score at 1–1, setting the stage for the decisive push an inning later.

In the bottom of the third, the Golden Eagles strung together their best offensive sequence of the day. Ayiana Cardenas sparked the rally with a double, then moved to third on a wild pitch. Mia Franco followed with a run-scoring double to bring in Cardenas and put La Sierra in front for the first time. Jazlynn Hernandez then delivered what proved to be the game-winning hit, a run-scoring single that plated Franco and extended the lead to 3–1.

Nelson chipped away in the sixth, cutting the deficit to 3–2. Morton and the La Sierra defense closed the door, stranding runners and keeping Nelson off the board in the seventh to lock down the win.

Offensively, La Sierra finished with seven hits, led by Cardenas' 2-for-3 day that included a double and a run scored. Franco added a key RBI double and a run, while Hernandez chipped in an RBI single.

La Sierra's third-inning outburst and Morton's complete-game performance stood up as the difference.

Game 2

La Sierra struck first in the second inning. With a runner aboard, Alina Franklin lined a single to center to bring home Lily Mugica and give the Golden Eagles a 1–0 lead. That early run set the tone for an offense that combined patience at the plate, drawing six walks with timely hits to keep pressure on Nelson throughout the afternoon.

The decisive damage came in the bottom of the fourth. After building traffic on the basepaths, Cardenas delivered the game's biggest swing, driving a two-run double to left as part of a three-run frame that pushed the lead to 4–0. Moments later, Franco added an RBI single to cap the inning, giving Dobbs a comfortable cushion to work with as La Sierra seized control.

Nelson responded in the fifth to climb back into the game to trim the deficit to 4–2. The Golden Eagles answered immediately in the bottom of the fifth when Mugica, who sparked the offense all day, came around to score on a passed ball to restore a three-run advantage at 5–2.

Dobbs handled the rest in the circle, working all 7.0 innings while scattering nine hits. The right-hander allowed three runs, walked just one and struck out one on 88 pitches. Nelson mounted one last push in the seventh to cut the margin to 5–3, but Dobbs induced the necessary outs to finish off the complete game and secure the win.

Offensively, La Sierra finished with five runs on seven hits, aided by six walks and an aggressive approach on the bases. Mugica was a key catalyst, going 2-for-2 with three runs scored, a walk and a stolen base. Cardenas went 1-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run, while Franklin and Franco each drove in a run.

Still, La Sierra's combination of early scoring, the pivotal fourth-inning surge and Dobbs' complete-game performance gave the Golden Eagles a solid early-season win at home and a template for success built on timely hitting and durability in the circle.
