Women's Soccer

Women's Soccer Downs Pacific Union, 1-0

Box Score RIVERSIDE - Women's Soccer faces former Cal Pac Opponent Pacific Union College for their first regular season game of the year. The game took place at La Sierra's soccer field for a late Sunday night match.

The Golden Eagles and the Pioneers both step on the pitch for their first regular season game of the year. Within the first minutes of play both teams start the game off with competitive offense and defense

A foul early on in the game from PUC allowed La Sierra a free kick just outside the 18. Leslie Lopez stepped up to take the shot offering a ball just over the cross bar. Tamara Gastelum drew the goal keeper out of position. PUC goalie Avery Alves recovered and blocked Gastelum's shot on goal. La Sierra has applied pressure on the defense in the first 10 minutes of play.

PUC's first shot came 19 minutes into the game, but Golden Eagles goalie Ali Razon had no issue keeping the ball from the goal. PUC again offered another shot on a cross from 3 to 2, but Razon was once again in the ball's path.

Quick footwork from Gia Aldama put the ball across the field in front of the goal, again Golden Eagles came up just short of a goal. The end of the first half left both teams scoreless.

The second half starts with a La Sierra kick off. In the first few seconds of play, La Sierra earned a corner kick resulting in a wide shot from Samantha Torres. For a second time both teams were quick to apply pressure, both adding shots to the final tally line.

Tianna Breshears had an opportunity in the 63rd minute of the game off a perfectly placed cross from Yazmina Guerrero. The sophomore guessed correctly but was unable to prevent it from going into the back of the net.

The forward Torres was able to put a ball in the goal for the Golden Eagles in the 66th minute of play. Priscila Alzaga had her first shot on goal with an incredible defensive save from PUC. The rebound allowed Torres to mark her first goal of the year.

PUC offered their best scoring opportunities in the 85th minute on a bender by Kyleigh Melconian that landed just left of the post and in the 88th minute on a break away from Camryn Folkers to Taylor Delgado. Razon came in clutch with her final save of the game.

La Sierra held off the Pioneers in the final minutes of play and secured their first win of the season. Women's soccer returns to the field Saturday, August 30 to take on Stanton University for an 8:00 p.m. start time at La Sierra University.
